Deadpool & Wolverine: The Story makes no sense, but it's still a Decent Time

Image
A lot happens in Deadpool & Wolverine . Not sure how much of it is substance, but a number of things happen in the movie. The film is foul and violent which is to be expected in anything Deadpool is in. It's fun to see Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine and in a suit that looks straight out of the comics. But what was the point of the movie? I'll share some thoughts and critiques. It's not news that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling the last few years. Too many TV shows, subpar movies, and uninteresting new characters are some reasons for the decline of the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine is a nice distraction from the woes plaguing the MCU of late. I was surprised at how many jokes are made about the current state of Marvel and even the jokes about the parent company Disney. It of course makes sense since Deadpool is a character that breaks the fourth wall, but I still give the movie credit.  We knew going in that the film would have many cameos. Deadpool e...

Twisters: You'll be Swept up by this Movie

Image
I'll admit that I was skeptical of Twisters when the first trailer dropped. I've never seen Twister , but I feared that Twisters would be an IP brought back to try and make a quick buck. Twisters proved me wrong though. The first aspect I want to highlight about Twisters is the protagonist Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones). She's likable, you root for her to succeed, and her journey throughout the film feels earned. I won't get into spoilers, but a tragic incident early in the movie causes Kate to leave behind storm chasing. Kate is convinced to get back into tornado-chasing by her old friend Javi (Anthony Ramos), but I appreciate how it takes Kate time to get acclimated to being around twisters again. Kate isn't some superhero who can hop right back into things with no issue. It seems like he's been in every film the past few years, but Glen Powell as Tyler is another character who works in Twisters . What you think of him initially changes as the movie progresses. Po...

A Quiet Place: Day One - A Solid Entry in the Franchise

Image
If you're familiar with the A Quiet Place films you know what to expect. People must make as little noise as possible to avoid detection from alien invaders with ultra-sensitive hearing. I think A Quiet Place: Day One is the weakest entry in the franchise, but it's still an enjoyable movie. You have all the tense moments, scary alien encounters, etc. that you're expecting. I always appreciate how these films take the most seemingly ordinary situations and make them cause the audience to worry because sound is involved. There's a few key aspects in A Quiet Place: Day One that stood out to me. I have to start with Lupita Nyong'o (Samira) who gives a memorable performance like she always seems to do. The way she looks scared throughout the movie is utterly believable. Without giving anything away, there is a scene early in the film at a puppet show that shows where her mind is as a character based on the circumstances in her life. A Quiet Place: Day One takes place i...

Thelma: A Nonagenarian's Mission Impossible

Image
I was surprised to find  Thelma takes inspiration from the Mission: Impossible franchise, but as strange as it may sound it works. Thelma (June Squibb) takes matters into her own hands after being duped by a phone scammer and has to face various challenges to track down the scammer. As you can imagine, watching a woman in her 90s undertake this quest is quite entertaining. The premise of Thelma is quite funny with laugh-out-loud moments throughout, but the film also has a lot of heart. Thelma enlists the help of her friend Ben (Richard Roundtree) early in the film. I appreciate Thelma and Ben's friendship. It comes across as very genuine, and you can tell the two have a lot of history together. They balance each other really well. I believe Thelma's relationship with her grandson Daniel (Fred Hechinger) is the highlight of Thelma . The chemistry between the two is palpable, and they effectively capture the grandmother/grandson dynamic. How much Daniel and Thelma care for one...

Inside Out 2: It Feels like Pixar of Old

Image
As the title of this review suggests, Inside Out 2 checks a lot of the boxes necessary for a good Pixar film. It's funny, lively, has characters you care about, has a well-animated world, hits the emotional beats. The last point especially is quite present in Inside Out 2 . I'll be intentionally vague and encourage you to check out the movie for yourself.  The kids who grew up with the first Inside Out can now relate to the emotions that Riley (Kensington Tallman) is dealing with. Speaking of emotions, both the returning emotions and new ones work really well in Inside Out 2 . Ennui (Adele Exarchopoulos) as one of the newcomers with Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and Anger (Lewis Black) as returning emotions are all standouts in my opinion. There's a case to be made that Joy (Amy Poehler) is one of Pixar's best characters. We empathize with Joy, understand her motivations, and want to see her succeed. Hence her name and the emotion she is Joy is obviously incredibly likable ...
