F1: Race to your Local Cinema for this One

Image
I'm not sure how to begin this review, dear reader. There are so many positive things to say about F1 . I guess I should start by saying that my faith in big-budget original moviemaking has been restored. How did I come to this conclusion? I'll unpack it for you. F1 looks and feels like a film that wanted to do things the right way. From what I understand, the actors trained for and did their own driving. The cinematography is on point. The variety of angles you get during the Formula One races in the movie really stands out. With the amount of driving in F1,  nothing gets repetitive. The cohesion among the various filmmaking departments involved is notable. I have to mention the sound aspect too. How the sound editing and sound mixing complement one another is brilliant. You get the experience of hearing the races like you were one of the drivers, while also getting to hear the broadcasters clearly. I appreciated getting both of those perspectives as an audience member. I can ...

Ballerina: A Worthwhile Addition to the John Wick Universe

Image
What's Ballerina about in two words? Fate and flamethrowers. You'll see what I mean. There is more to the film than just the two words I shared, though. To add a few more words before diving in deeper, Ballerina (or From the World of John Wick: Ballerina ) is worth your time if you enjoy the John Wick movies. To describe Ballerina is to describe what you expect in the John Wick franchise. Crazy and memorable action sequences, which in this film include scenes in a nightclub, tavern and of course, the one with the flamethrowers. The strange sense of humor found in this universe. A movie that is very visually appealing and cinematic (both indoor and outdoor locations look fantastic). There are appearances of familiar faces that make sense, such as the Director (Anjelica Huston), Winston (Ian McShane), Charon (the late Lance Reddick) and John Wick (Keanu Reeves). Outside of the effective connections to the existing franchise, what makes  Ballerina stand out? The idea of fate ve...

Karate Kid: Legends - An Odd, Less than Legendary Entry in the Franchise

Image
We know what to expect from Karate Kid films. A youth receives unwanted attention from a bully and is aided by a mentor to defeat said bully in a karate tournament. It's no surprise that Karate Kid: Legends  contains this plot. I was surprised by various decisions made in this movie, though. Karate Kid: Legends might have the most hurried pacing I've ever seen in a film. To say this movie keeps things moving is an understatement (I guess the word "movie" does contain the word "move" in it). The pacing is the biggest problem with the film. I can't think of any story or character elements that are allowed time to breathe and develop. Which is a shame because the movie is full of likable characters and good chemistry between the actors. Li Fong (Ben Wang) is a good protagonist and I like how he interacts with Mia (Sadie Stanley) and Victor (Joshua Jackson). Both mentor figures, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), are fun to watch tog...
