Captain America: Brave New World - No Brave Direction Here

When did everything with the Marvel Cinematic Universe become so average? It doesn't feel that long ago when Marvel Studios was at its peak with movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to name a couple. Now, Marvel movies are just trying to recapture a bygone era and Captain America: Brave New World is no exception.

For the sake of brevity, almost everything about Captain America: Brave New World is average (or "mid" for the young readers). The action has some moments but is fairly forgettable. The characters are just alright. The story has the slightest amount of intrigue. Some elements of the film are worse than others though. There is an inexcusable amount of exposition present. A fair amount of the CGI looks poor. Captain America's (Anthony Mackie) outfit feels like a hodgepodge of multiple Marvel characters and Falcon's (Danny Ramirez) outfit might be the worst in any Marvel movie. I'm not being hyperbolic, you'll see what I mean. The main antagonist is described as a super genius, but is regularly outsmarted which doesn't make for an engaging villain.

Overall, I have difficulty understanding why Captain America: Brave New World was made. There are plenty of reports about a troubled production, rewrites and reshoots. But what was this movie trying to accomplish? The film is trying to be like one of the best Marvel movies in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it comes nowhere close to it. It's a shame because I see Anthony Mackie as a very likable actor. I was excited to see where Sam Wilson as Captain America now goes, but Captain America: Brave New World doesn't do much of anything to advance the character. It's tough to see what motivates him.

Going to see the new Marvel movie was the thing to do for many years. We're well past that era. Captain America: Brave New World isn't the worst Marvel film, but that doesn't mean the studio deserves your continued attendance.

Rating:

Yellow Light - I'd recommend Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
