Mad Max: Fury Road - Best Action Movie Ever?
It's not a surprise that my review of Furiosa led to a rewatch of Mad Max: Fury Road (here's the link to my full review). A lot of the elements I appreciated in Furiosa also apply to Mad Max: Fury Road which isn't a surprise. The actors are engaging in their roles, the set pieces and action are fantastic, the universe is engaging to watch, etc. I believe Furiosa has better world-building, the most stunning vehicle in the franchise (looking at you war rig), and character development. At the same time, Furiosa and Mad Max: Fury Road are different films within their respective universe. Per the title of this review, Mad Max: Fury Road might be the best action film ever made.
The pacing of Mad Max: Fury Road is quite astonishing. The audience is thrown right into the action and it really never lets up. To put it simply, the film is a two-hour car chase. This simplification sells the movie short though. How scale is conveyed and the sheer number of vehicles and action set pieces are astonishing. The creativity behind the design of the vehicles as a whole is the best of any of the Mad Max films. The landscapes in the Mad Max: Fury Road are incredible to behold in and of themselves, but also add to the action that's depicted. The cast of the movie should also be highlighted.
Furiosa almost feels like the protagonist in Mad Max: Fury Road. This isn't a bad thing as the character is interesting and played well by Charlize Theron regardless of if you've seen Furiosa's backstory in her standalone movie. Tom Hardy as Max does what should be done with the character. He is gruff, a loner, capable, and does the right thing even if it takes some time to get there. Nicholas Hoult as the War Boy Nux almost steals the movie. Nux's arc in Mad Max: Fury Road is great and that's all I'll say in case you haven't seen the film.
Mad Max: Fury Road is a masterpiece. Writer/Director George Miller puts you in the front seat and you're in it for two hours. I'm not sure if we'll ever get another action film like this, but even if we don't I'm glad that this film exists. I'll leave you with this quote from Nux summarizing the experience of watching Mad Max: Fury Road.
"Oh, what a day...what a lovely day!"
