The Fall Guy: A Love Letter to Stunts, but Movie Stars are what make it work
The Fall Guy is what a summer movie should be. It's entertaining, funny, has good action, and great chemistry between the lead actors. The story doesn't make sense some of the time and you might see some reveals coming before they happen, but it doesn't matter. With a movie as enjoyable as The Fall Guy you're willing to suspend your disbelief a little more than usual.
Director David Leitch is a former stuntman and stunt coordinator. In recent years, he's moved into directing (with films like Deadpool 2) and producing (the John Wick films). You can tell that The Fall Guy was made to show appreciation for the stunt community. As you'd expect, the stunts in the movie are really good. Even better than the stunts are Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt).
The dynamic between Colt and Jody is established right from the start of The Fall Guy. The characters are fun to watch and you can tell that Gosling and Blunt are having a great time portraying them. Gosling especially seems to be down for any type of role which I appreciate in an actor. Colt and Jody are what really make the movie work. Don't get me wrong, there are good performances from the other actors in The Fall Guy.
Hollywood is hopefully moving away from the "Marvelization" that killed the movie star, and a movie like The Fall Guy shows that stars can make crowd-pleasing movies. It doesn't always have to be about intellectual property. Just look at some flops from 2023 alone. I appreciate that there are still movie stars. If you want some good escapism with a bucket of popcorn handy, I recommend you see The Fall Guy.
